Weekend CNA/GNA Program Information
In 9 weeks, students enrolled in our weekend certified/geriatric nursing assistant certification program can complete their courses. Our program meets all state and federal training requirements. Students taking this program will be prepared to function as qualified nursing assistants under supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs). We design our courses based on the strict curriculum requirements of the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland Board of Nursing.
The total length of the program is 115 hours, and is divided into three components: theory, laboratory and clinical. The theory component lasts for 40 hours, the laboratory component is 35, and the clinical component is 40.
Here are some details about the three components.
Theory
This component is designed to provide students with sufficient knowledge regarding performing basic patient care services under the supervision of a licensed nurse. During this part of the program, students will learn about proper hygiene and grooming, nutrition, basic physiology and anatomy, principles of toileting, medical terminology, measuring of vital signs, communication techniques, infection control principles, and more. The teaching of the course involves several different strategies including simulation, demonstration, group discussions, and gaming.
Laboratory
To supplement the lecture aspect of the course, students enrolled in the weekend CNA /GNA certification program also learn hands-on skills. Over the course of 35 hours, students will be able to boost their confidence and become empowered through practical applications. Some of the skills learned during the laboratory section of the courses include:
- Hand washing
- Feeding
- Bed making
- Transferring, ambulating, positioning and moving patients
- Performing personal hygiene and grooming
- Measuring vital signs and weight
Clinical
Students enrolled in our courses also need to complete 40 hours of a clinical externship. This externship takes place in a long-term care facility in the Baltimore area that is affiliated with Top Knowledge Healthcare Institute. Before the externship begins, we provide an orientation of the facility and its policies and procedures. You’ll be able to get hands-on practical experience through this externship while under the supervision and guidance of an experienced registered nurse.
Following the completed course, you’ll be prepared to take the GNA exam We can also provide job placement assistance once you’ve graduated.
