Phlebotomy Training Program Description
The phlebotomy program is approved by MHEC and is only offered at our Rockville, Maryland location. Unlike many phlebotomy technician training programs, our program is composed of theory, laboratory and clinical components. The phlebotomy technician training program prepares students to collect and process blood samples for laboratory analysis. Students will learn information about basic anatomy and physiology, the healthcare delivery system, blood collection equipment, venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, medical, legal and ethical implications of blood collection and more.
Students will have the opportunity to gain real hands on experience by performing live sticks on one another during the laboratory component of the program. Also, Top Knowledge students will have the unique opportunity in completing a 40-clock hour externship experience at a clinical laboratory. This experience will allow our students to put the theoretical aspects of the Phlebotomy Technician training program into practice by performing blood draws on patients.
Upon program completion, the graduate will be eligible to become nationally certified as a Phlebotomy Technician through National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Phlebotomy Training Program Enrollment Requirements (Due before or on first day of program)
- A Photo ID. Must be at least 18 years or older.
- A SS card or Tax ID number.
- Proof of a High school diploma, transcript, GED.
- Pay the $100.00 registration fee at the time of registration.
- Proof of Immunization records or blood titers for Hepatitis B or a signed waiver form Click here for the Hepatitis B waiver form.
- Proof of a Tuberculosis skin test or Chest X-Ray performed within 6 months of start date.
- A clean background check. Will be performed by school.
- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association. For those interested, a CPR class will be offered once during program and the cost is $85.00.
Evening Phlebotomy Technician Training Class Schedule
- Class meets Tuesday and Thursday from 5 pm-10 pm
- Clinical meets Monday-Friday for 8 hours/day for 1 week. *Exact hours are dependent upon the clinical site. Hours are normally between 7 am and 6 pm.

Weekend Phlebotomy Technician Training Class Schedule
- Class meets Saturday and Sunday from 9 am-2 pm.
- Clinical meets Monday-Friday for 8 hours/day for 1 week. *Exact hours are dependent upon the clinical site. Hours are normally between 7 am and 6 pm.

What Does a Phlebotomist Do?
A phlebotomist draws and prepares blood for testing through venipuncture or capillary puncture (finger sticks and heel sticks).
How Do You Get a Phlebotomy Certification?
Right now, only four states in the US require state certification to practice phlebotomy. Those states are California, Louisiana, Washington, and Nevada. Although a certification isn’t required in other states, it offers a large advantage to those looking to start their phlebotomy career. In order to become a nationally certified phlebotomy technician (CPT), you generally need to complete a certain number of successful venipunctures and capillary punctures (finger sticks) and pass a written exam.
Where Can I Work as a Phlebotomist?
Typically, phlebotomy technicians work in hospitals, diagnostic and medical laboratories, and doctors offices. They may also travel to patients’ homes or set up mobile donation centers and travel to different sites.
